Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week; Steer calves 300-400 lbs were 5.00-7.00 lower and 400-600 lbs sold 12.00- 20.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-700 lbs were 1.00-3.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-350 lbs were 29.00 lower while 350-400 lbs sold 5.00 lower and 400-450 lbs sold 10.00 higher. Heifers 450-500 lbs were 14.00 lower and 500-600 sold 7.00-21.00 higher. Feeder heifers 650-700 lbs were 8.00 higher. Trade was moderately higher with good demand on slightly higher numbers. going into a 2 week shutdown. Slaughter cows sold 2.00-3.00 higher while slaughter bulls were steady to 2.00 higher. Moderately higher market with excellent buyer attendance. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! See you in 2024

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
