Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week,steer calves 300-400 lbs were 2.00-7.00 higher and 400-500 lbs sold 20.00-21.00 higher while 500-600 lbs were 4.00-20.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-700 lbs sold 14.00-16.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-450 lbs were 11.00-13.00 higher while 450-550 lbs sold 12.00-19.00 higher and 550-600 lbs were sharply higher. Insufficient numbers of feeder heifers to compare. Trade was moderately stronger with higher demand on a better market. Slaughter cows sold 3.00-5.00 higher, instances 10.00 higher while slaughter bulls were steady to 10.00 higher. Larger numbers with excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
