Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week with significantly smaller numbers; Steer calves 350-500 lbs were 9.00-10.00 higher, 500-550 lbs sold 2.00 higher while 550-600 lbs were 3.00 lower. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs sold 2.00 lower and 650-700 lbs sold 8.00 higher. Heifer calves 350-400 lbs were 12.00 higher and 400-450 lbs sold 5.00 lower. 450-500 lbs were 12.00 lower and 500-550 lbs sold 6.00 lower. Feeder heifers 600-650 were 4.00 lower while 650-700 lbs sold 5.00 higher.Keep in mind there were much smaller numbers to trade on. Slaughter cows were steady to 2.00 higher and slaughter bulls held steady. Trade was sluggish on smaller numbers with good demand.Excellent buyer attendance

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
