Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week; Steer calves 350-400 lbs were 7.00 higher and 400-450 lbs sold 6.00 higher. 450-500 lbs were 7.00 higher while 500-550 lbs held steady. Steers 550-600 lbs were 7.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs sold 14.00 higher and 650-700 lbs were steady. Heifer calves 350-400 lbs sold 2.00 higher while 400-500 lbs were 10.00 higher. Heifers 500-550 lbs were 2.00 higher while 550-600 lbs sold 12.00 higher. Feeder heifer numbers last week were insufficient to compare. Slaughter cows were 1.00-2.00 higher and slaughter bulls sold 2.00 higher. Trade was active on moderate demand with larger numbers. Excellent buyer attendance. Next sale will be June 5,2023

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
