Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week; Steer calves under 350 lbs had too low of numbers to compare either week, 350-400 lbs were 4.00 higher.while 400-450 lbs sold 19.00 higher. 450-500 lbs were 15.00 higher and 500-600 lb steers sold 1.00-9.00 lower. Feeder steers 650-700 lbs were 4.00 lower. Heifer calves 350-400 lbs sold 16.00 higher while 400-450 lbs were 3.00 higher. 450-600 lbs heifer calves were 10.00-14.00 lower. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs sold 4.00 lower and 700-750 lbs were 18.00 lower. Slaughter cows sold 1.00-2.00 higher and slaughter bulls were 7.00 lower to 14.00 higher. Trade was very active on larger numbers with good demand. Excellent buyer attendance

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
