Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week; Steer calves 300-400 lbs 3.00-4.00 higher and 400-450 lbs sold 4.00 higher. 450-500 lbs steers were 13.00 lower while 500-550 lb sold 8.00 higher. 550-600 lbs were 17.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-700 lbs sold 21.00-24.00 higher 700-800 lbs were 9.00-13.00 higher. Heifer calves 350-400 lbs were 8.00 lower while 400-450 lbs sold 5.00 higher. 450-500 lbs were steady and 500-550 lbs were 8.00 higher while 550-600 lbs sold 19.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 were 8.00 higher and 650-700 lbs sold 19.00 higher .Trade was moderately active with strong demand on better numbers . Slaughter cows steady to 5.00 higher while slaughter bulls sold 3.00-12.00 higher . Excellent buyer attendance

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
