Market comments — USDA reporter

The last Feeder Cattle Sale was three weeks ago therefore no market comparison may be made. Very Good Demand for several long strings, load lots, and many packages of Feeder Steers, Feeder Heifers, and Replacement Heifers as well as a Premier Bull sale which all sold on a Strong, Active Market. Much of the Offering was Home Raised and carried Light to Moderate Flesh with some instances of Moderate Plus. Unseasonably warm weather has created mud in some pens resulting in evidence of some tagg but nothing too distracting. In correlation with the bull sale were several lots of high quality replacement heifers which sold on a per head basis as noted in the report. The next Feeder Cattle Sale is March 5th, expecting 1,000 Head.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
