Compared to last week Feeder Steers 350 to 500 10.00 to 15.00 lower, 500 to 550 Steady to 4.00 lower, 550 to 600 6.00 to 8.00 lower, 600 to 650 Steady to 4.00 lower, 700 to 750 Steady to 1.00 higher, Feeder Heifers 350 to 400 6.00 to 8.00 lower, 400 to 450 8.00 to 10.00 lower, 450 to 500 6.00 to 8.00 lower, 500 to 550 Steady to 2.00 higher, 550 to 700 Steady to 2.00 lower. Very Good Demand for several long strings, many load lots, and many many packages of Feeder Steers and Feeder Heifers which sold on a Moderate to Active Market. The decline in the Futures Market continues to put pressure on the market but the Supply continues to be Attractive, Home Raised calves with Spring and Fall Vaccinations, carrying Light to Moderate Flesh. USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
