Compared to last week Feeder Steers 350 to 400 6.00 higher, 400 to 500 3.00 lower, 500 to 550 3.00 higher, 550 to 650 7.00 higher, Feeder Heifers 400 to 450 8.00 higher, 450 to 500 6.00 lower, 500 to 550 Steady to 3.00 higher, 550 to 650 8.00 higher, 750 to 800 Steady. Very Good Demand for Feeder Steers, Feeder Heifers, Replacement Heifers, and Tested Open Heifers which all sold on a Strong, Active Market. Lots of rain in the area over the last week created muddy conditions so some of the Offering showed some mud and tag but otherwise the overall weighing conditions were favorable and the presentation was attractive. Nearly the entire Offering was Home Raised, off the cow, and had Spring and Fall vaccinations. The Next Feeder Cattle Sale is October 24, Expecting 9,000 Head.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
