Compared to last week Feeder Steers under 400 Steady, 400 to 450 4.00 to 6.00 higher, 450 to 500 Steady to 2.00 higher, 500 to 600 3.00 to 5.00 higher, 600 to 650 1.00 to 3.00 higher, 650 to 700 4.00 higher, 700 to 750 Steady, over 750 were lightly tested, Feeder Heifers under 450 2.00 to 3.00 lower, 450 to 600 Steady to 2.00 lower, 600 to 650 4.00 higher, 900 to 950 Steady. Very Good Demand with many new faces in the seats for Several Strings and Many Load Lots and Packages of Feeder Steers, Feeder Heifers, and Replacement Heifers which all sold on a Very Strong, Active Market throughout the Sale. Nearly the entire Offering consisted of Light to Moderate Fleshed Cattle, with a good weigh-up, no tag and had Spring and Fall vaccinations. The Next Feeder Cattle Sale is October 25, Spring Calf and Yearling Special, expecting 8,000 Head.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
