Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

No Feeder Cattle Sale last week, comparisons made to two weeks ago. Feeder Steers under 450 12.00 higher, 500 to 550 Steady, 800 to 950 3.00 to 4.00 higher, Feeder Heifers under 500 Steady, 750 to 850 2.00 higher, 850 to 900 4.00 higher, 900 to 1050 Steady. Good Demand for Several Long Strings of Feeder Steers and Many Packages of Feeder Steers and Feeder Heifers which sold on a Moderate to Active Market. Nearly all of the Offering was Home Raised, fully vaccinated, and carried Light to Moderate Flesh. Today's sale was the true start of the Fall run of Spring born calves. Many of the calves were straight of the cow, very attractive, and carried a favorable weigh-up. There was some price disparity between small packages and Load Lot offerings that was more evident in the lighter cattle. The Next Feeder Cattle Sale is October 5, Expecting 600 Yearlings and 5,000 Spring Calves.
