Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers 2.00-8.00 lower. Steer and heifer calves sold 10.00-20.00 lower. Demand moderate and cautious as cattle futures traded heavy on both sides of the line. Despite numbers remaining very tight, the market is still extremely volatile and any little thing can send markets one way or another. Rains came to parts of the state putting a slight dent in the drought. Southwestern Oklahoma remains very dry and temperatures are heating up. The Ides of March will be upon us soon, however I believe many cattle have already moved off wheat due to limited moisture or because of the good market. Slaughter cows and bulls sold steady to 1.00 higher, Lean cows 8.00 higher. Heavy competition between cow buyers and replacement buyers continues. Demand for replacement cows is good with some cows headed to market due to lack of water.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
