Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 3.00 lower, steers weighing 600-700lbs suitable for grass were 4.00-5.00 higher. Feeder heifers steady to 3.00 higher. Steer calves over 500lbs steady to 5.00 lower, under 500lbs 10.00-15.00 higher. Heifer calves 5.00-10.00 higher. Demand was moderate to good this week as buyers were very selective for flesh condition. Supply was up 34% this week versus last week. With the bulk of the supply being heavier weight cattle, this is indicating the March wheat run has started. Slaughter cows steady to 4.00 higher. Slaughter bulls 2.00 higher. Packer demand continues to be very good, but the majority of supply is still being returned to feed or grass.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
