Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers 4.00-8.00 lower. Stocker steers 20.00 higher. Steer calves unevenly steady. Feeder heifers and heifer calves 5.00-10.00 lower. This week showed that consistency has all but disappeared from the markets. Buyers have specific orders, they will push prices as high as needed to fill, but those orders have not been consistent throughout the week or across different sales, making it difficult to get a clear feel for the market across Oklahoma. Rainfall has also been inconsistent across Oklahoma this week. Parts of Southeastern Oklahoma have received five plus inches of rain, while areas of Southwestern Oklahoma have received next to nothing, making it difficult to stock calves or yearlings on wheat or grass when there simply isn't any growth. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 lower. Lean cows 10.00 lower. Slaughter bulls steady.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
