Compared to last week steer calves under 600 lbs sold 6.00 to 9.00 higher, 600-800 sold unevenly steady, over 800 lbs sold 1.00 to 5.00 lower. Heifer calves sold steady, over 600 lbs sold steady to 7.00 higher. Demand was good with several buyers bidding readily for all classes of cattle. That time of year where buyers start looking for calves with fall precondition shots. Feedlots that do not like to wean fresh calves have jumped into the market this week across the reporting areas trying to buy yearling cattle. Feedlots traded show-list at steady money from 184.00 to 185.00 live and at 292.00 dressed. Silage chopping is winding down in Nebraska and some feedlots have moved to high moisture corn. The start-up has been slow on high moisture corn is till rather wet and rain showers have slowed harvest down.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
