Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steers under 700 lbs sold 8.00 to 10.00 higher and over 700 lbs sold steady to 3.00 lower. Heifers under 800 lbs sold 3.00 to 4.00 lower and over 800 lbs sold steady to 2.00 lower. Demand was moderate to good. Feedlots sold dressed sales 2.00 higher at 292.00 and live sales sold 1.00 higher from 184.00 to 185.00. Many feedlots are completing silage chopping and some have started to put up high moisture corn for feed supply for the next 365 days. Some areas of the state received rain showers letting farmers shut down pivots as crops are nearing maturity. Several hay producers are on fourth of alfalfa and continue to put up grass hay and almost anything that will go through a big round baler.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
