Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week steers under 600 lbs sold 8.00 to 10.00 higher, over 600 lbs sold steady to 5.00 lower. Fly weight heifers sold 6.00 higher, 500 to 800 lbs sold steady to 3.00 lower and over 800 lbs sold 8.00 lower. Demand was good for cattle suited for summer turnout with moderate demand for feedlot placements. Even with the brutal cold the previous week some cattle continue to display extra flesh (fat) at marketing time. Another week of corn closing higher on the board of trade. March corn was up 6.50 cents on the week with Friday's close at 5.62. Nebraska feedlot sales sold steady on live at 114.00 and dressed sales sold 2.00 lower at 180.00.
