Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steer calves 400 to 449 lbs and 500 to 549 lbs mostly steady, 450 to 499 lbs and 550 to 650 lbs 10.00 to 12.00 lower. Heifer calves 400 to 599 lbs 7.00 to 10.00 lower with instances up to 15.00 lower on 450 to 549 lbs. Moderate good demand for calves today. A large offering with many packages and quite a few loads of home raised calves all coming off the cow, most in light to moderate flesh. Less colored hides than last week but preconditioning varied again and calves without good spring and fall shots see discounts resulting in wide price spreads. Quality varied, but mostly average to attractive with some calves showing a little weather stress. A moderate to active market. A tough day on the futures for both live and feeder cattle with losses anywhere from 5.00 to over 7.00. Any confidence buyers had in the market is quickly eroding as the last couple weeks have been so uncertain. Many producers are still pushing through harvest which is continually slowed down by foggy and damp weather. Next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, November 16.
