Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to Tuesday: best test on steers 450 to 599 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 higher. Best test on heifers 450 to 499 lbs 10.00 to 14.00 higher, 500 to 549 mostly steady. Good to very good demand for today's large calf offering. Many loads and packages of home raised calves all coming off the cow, flesh condition an attractive light to moderate. Demand was still influenced by hide color and shot records, more of today's offering had complete vaccination records. Quality was mostly average to attractive. Many buyers, farmer feeders, and a few bull breeders in the seats, and with the board up over 4.00 on feeder cattle this made for an active market. Temperatures have warmed up and producers are busy in the fields trying to complete harvest. Next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, November 9.
