Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steers 400 to 499 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 lower, 500 to 649 lbs mostly steady. Heifers 400 to 449 and 500 to 549 lbs mostly steady, 450 to 499 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 lower. Moderate to good demand for calves today. All calves off the cow again this week, quite a few loads and many packages available. Flesh similar to last week, mostly light to moderate. More colored cattle featured this week and these continue to see discounts at times. More calves with complete preconditioning today. A moderate to active market seen for this offering. The futures looked to be rebounding at the start of the week only to lose over 3.00 today. With so much uncertainty in the market, buyers are more choosy then ever when selecting calves to put on feed. Harvest is still in progress but many will finish up this week. No feeder cattle sale next week due to Thanksgiving, next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, November 30. Happy Thanksgiving!!
