Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steer calves 400 to 700 mostly steady except 500 to 550 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher, instances up to 6.00 higher on 551 to 600 lbs. Heifer calves 400 to 500 lbs mostly steady, 501 to 600 lbs steady to 3.00 higher, 601 to 650 lbs steady. Good demand for another large calf offering this week. Quite a few loads available, and many packages. A few weaned consignments, weaned from 45 days and up, but the majority of calves came off the cow. Preconditioning remains a very important selling point, and calves without at least a full round of shots in the fall see fewer outlets and discounted prices. Flesh varied today, from light to some moderate plus. An active market with many buyers and some farmer feeders in the seats today. No feeder cattle next week due to Thanksgiving. There will be a bred cattle sale on Tuesday, November 23. The next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, December 2.
