Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

No feeder cattle last week due to Thanksgiving. Compared to two weeks ago: steers 400 to 550 lbs 8.00 to 10.00 higher except 450 to 500 lbs mostly steady, 551 to 700 lbs 1.00 to 4.00 higher. Heifers 400 to 500 lbs 10.00 to 12.00 higher, 501 to 650 lbs 3.00 to 7.00 higher. Very good demand for this large calf offering featuring a few loads and many packages. Many attractive calves to choose from, mostly in light to moderate flesh. About a third of the calves were weaned, from 21 days on up. Varied preconditioning but most calves had at least one round of shots in the fall. An active market with many buyers attending the sale today and eager to buy calves. Temperatures remain much warmer than normal for this time of year. Next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, December 9. This will be the final feeder cattle sale of 2021.
