Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steer calves 450 to 700 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 lower except 500 to 550 lbs mostly steady. Heifer calves 400 to 600 lbs mostly steady, instances up to 6.00 lower on 500 to 550 lbs. Good demand for today's large calf offering with best demand seen for reputation calves sold in loads. Many attractive calves to choose from today, most in light to moderate flesh and off the cow. As with previous weeks, calves without full preconditioning, or at least a full round of fall shots, see light to moderate demand. An active market with many buyers as well as some farmer feeders and bull breeders attending the sale. A high wind advisory for much of the state today with some areas seeing some snow. Travel conditions for high profile vehicles such as cattle trucks are not ideal and many calves will be waiting out this bout of winter weather at the sale barn. Next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, November 18.
