Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to Tuesday: steer calves 400 to 450 lbs 8.00 to 10.00 higher, 451 to 650 lbs mostly steady. Heifer calves 400 to 500 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher, 501 to 600 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 higher. Good to very good demand for today's large calf offering featuring many loads and packages. Quality similar to Tuesday, mostly average to attractive. Most calves in light to moderate flesh, slightly more flesh overall than Tuesday. All the calves today were off the cow and most had full preconditioning, or at least a full round of shots in the fall. An active market seen for today's offering. A few cancellations due to muddy roads created by yesterday's rain. Cooler temps for the rest of the week and weekend. Next feeder cattle sale is Tuesday, October 26, featuring many Red Angus cattle.
