Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to Tuesday: steer calves 400 to 500 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher, 501 to 700 lbs mostly steady with instances up to 4.00 higher on 600 to 650 lbs. Heifer calves 400 to 450 lbs mostly steady, 451 to 550 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 lower, 551 to 600 lbs mostly steady. Good to very good demand for this large offering of calves today with best demand seen for steers and heifers from reputation outfits selling in load lots. Many loads and packages of attractive quality calves offered, most of these had full preconditioning and all were off the cow. Flesh mostly light to moderate today. Calves without all their shots were discounted at times, especially those with just spring shots or only a 7 way shot. Am active market with many buyers and farmer feeders in the seats, market activity grew stronger throughout the day. Much of the area saw rain again yesterday. Lots and roads are muddy from this constant fall precipitation and harvest is becoming increasingly difficult. This has put some pressure on the calf market as putting bawling calves into these muddy conditions is not very attractive. Many farmer feeders would like to wrap up harvest before taking on calves. Next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, November 4.
