Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steers 450 to 500 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 lower, 501 to 600 lbs mostly steady. Heifers 450 to 500 lbs 3.00 to 4.00 lower, 501 to 550 lbs mostly steady. Moderate to good demand for a much smaller offering than expected today due to moisture the area has received in the last week. Many cancellations due to muddy roads and lots. Mostly packages offered today with just a hand full of loads. All calves were off the cow and had some preconditioning, many had full preconditioning. Flesh was mostly light to moderate, and quality average to attractive. A little mud on some of the calves today. Similar to last week, calves under 400 lbs see light demand. A moderate to active market with slightly less buyers than would be normal this time of year. Many are reluctant to buy calves until things dry out a bit and the sun shines. Harvest has come to a halt for now. Next feeder cattle sale is Tuesday, October 19, expecting 4000 head of calves and starting at 10:30 am.
