Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on steers 700 to 750 lbs and 800 to 850 lbs mostly steady. Best test on heifers 600 to 650 lbs steady. Good demand for today's offering of packages and a handful of loads of home raised cattle. Flesh today mostly light to moderate plus, less flesh overall on the cattle than last week. This week's sale offered more light fleshed, light weight cattle which may be suitable for grass, these cattle see very good demand, especially those sold in loads. Quality mostly attractive today. An active market with a more limited crowd of buyers attending the sale today. Temperatures have finally warmed above zero and the next week looks to have temps in the upper 30's and some 40's giving livestock and producers some relief. Next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, February 25.
