Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: different weight classes this week compared to last week, best test on steers 700 to 750 lbs mostly steady with an instance 5.00 higher. Best test on heifers 600 to 650 lbs mostly steady. Good to very good demand for today's offering of many packages and loads. Cattle in light flesh which may be suitable for summer grass saw excellent demand. Flesh varied quite a bit today, from light to heavy flesh at times. Quality varied more this week than last week, mostly average to attractive quality today. An active market with many buyers and some farmer feeders and bull breeders in the seats today. The area saw above normal temperatures this week with more of this kind of weather in the forecast for the next week or more.
