Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

No sale last week, compared to two weeks ago: best test on steers 600 to 700 lbs 2.00 higher, 750 to 800 lbs steady to 1.00 higher. Best test on heifers 500 to 550 lbs and 600 to 650 lbs steady to 3.00 lower. Good to very good demand for today's large offering of many loads, packages, and several strings of both home raised and backgrounded steers and heifers. Quality on packages varied quite a bit today, from plain to attractive, quality on loads and strings mostly attractive. Varied flesh, from light to moderate plus, with some heavy flesh at times. An active market with good attendance despite the very cold weather the area is having. Cold weather predicted until the middle of next week with this weekend being the most frigid. Next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, February 18.
