Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steers 500 to 550 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher, 551 to 650 lbs 5.00 to 8.00 higher with instances up to 10.00 higher. 651 to 800 lbs steady to 4.00 lower. Heifers 500 to 700 lbs 3.00 to 7.00 higher except 600 to 650 lbs mostly steady. Good to very good demand for today's large offering of packages and loads with best demand seen for light fleshed, light weight cattle which may fit grass programs, especially those sold in load lots. Quality similar to last week with many attractive cattle to choose from, several outfits selling multiple loads of same weight, home raised cattle. Flesh varied today, from light to moderate plus. An active market with many buyers and a few farmer feeders attending the auction today. No sale next week due to the Black Hills Stock Show, next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, February 11.
