Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold unevenly steady. A slightly lighter offering this week with many smaller groups of calves coming to town, load lots of yearlings were fewer and overall quality was not what has been seen in previous weeks. There was some strength in calves that were offered with good health programs and weaning and demand for those that could be turned out to wheat shortly was good to very good. Several reporters noted that it seemed buyers had the orders and were willing to pay more but there just wasn't enough low risk cattle in the offerings this week. Buyers are running out of time to straighten any bawlers out though so higher health risk cattle are seeing the typical fall discounts resulting in some pretty wide price spreads. A few stick-out sales this week included 11 head of 515 lb. steers at Ozarks Regional Stockyards which sold for 312.00. Windsor Livestock Auction sold 19 head of 705 lb. steers for 266.00. Green City Livestock Auction sold a load of 914 lb. steers at 244.35. There were probably more impressive highlights on the heifer side of the market this week as some bigger consignments came to town with several being thin fleshed. Kingsville Livestock Auction had one consignment of 800 head that sold mostly in two drafts, 134 head of 617 lb. heifers that sold for 279.00 and another 527 head of 698 lbs. heifers which brought 263.10. Lolli Brothers Livestock Market sold 20 head of 505 lb. heifers that were tagged as fancy for 301.00. Springfield Livestock Marketing Center sold 20 head of 828 lb. heifers for 229.00. 32 head of 958 lb. heifers at Green City Livestock Auction brought 220.25. Boxed beef cutouts showed some unseasonal strength this week, choice closed on Friday at 302.58, up 5.89 and select closed at 287.61, up 5.53 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled only 22K head at the 2:00 cut off time for the report, its likely trade continued with more head were sold into the evening, however. Live sales were reported from 186.00-188.00, 1.00 higher and dressed sales from 294.00-296.00, 2.00 higher. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 2793 head with a weighted average weight of 543.86 lbs. and a price value of 279.66, 4.28 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 21.14 per cwt.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
