Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, yearling steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher, calves sold 5.00 to 10.00 higher. In a quite unexpected occurrence of events for the time of year the calf market found significant strength this week. Despite the cooler nights and difficulty of keeping new stock healthy buyers seemed to have ample orders to fill and eagerly bought up what the market had to offer. In some cases, reporters even mentioned that discounts for those unweaned bawling calves was much less and, in some cases, nonexistent. As the day/night mercury swings get even more wild it would be shocking if this trend continues, however it maybe a case of potential buyers fearing a lighter fall run and difficulty of finding enough stock. As the old saying goes "it's hard to be a cowboy without cows" and luckily there is still some cowboys left. Recent moisture surely has some effect on the outlook as well providing hope for fall pastures and wheat grazing. Grain harvest is in full swing and given early harvest reports there will no doubt be a lot of corn that is walked to town and sent though the sale barns rather than the elevators. A few stick-out sales this week included 23 head of 547 lb. steers at Kingsville Livestock Auction that sold for 315.00. Callaway Livestock Center that sold 80 head of 640 lb. steers for 294.50 and a load of 712 lb. steers for 269.75. Windsor Livestock Auction had a load of 756 lb. steers which brought 259.75. Unionville Livestock Market sold five loads of steers from 875-900 lbs. from 249.85-252.75. On the heifer side of the market MO-KAN Livestock Market sold a small pkg of 535 lb. heifers at 275.50. A load of 736 lb. heifers sold at Joplin Regional Stockyards for 251.00. F and T Livestock Market had a load of 833 lb. heifers which brought 234.50. Boxed beef cutouts were lower for the week, choice closed on Friday at 296.69, down 3.50 and select closed at 282.08, down 6.51 compared to last week. Short bought packers needing inventory went to buying cattle on Thursday this week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled about 75K head. Live sales were reported from 185.00-187.00, 1.00-2.00 higher and dressed sales from 292.00-294.00, 2.00-4.00 higher. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 3652 head with a weighted average weight of 556.84 lbs. and a price value of 283.94, 10.61 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 23.72 per cwt.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
