Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the light run last week, comparable sales of steers and heifers sold mostly steady to 5.00 higher, with some spots of 10.00 higher on top quality consignments. The supply was moderate, and demand was good, although calves that have extra hair, unweaned, or without shots seeing discounts and basically being supported by more desirable offerings and overall low numbers. Outside of the brick-and-mortar auction barns it was a bit of a rough week for livestock. Futures markets, beef cutouts and feedlot trade all experienced a negative week. Early week futures were downright ugly before regaining some of the loss's late week. Seasonally there is an expected decline that typically comes after the 4th of July holiday but given markets have been steadily climbing nearly every week all year the abrupt turn did catch some attention. A few stick out sales this week included several loads of top quality steers that checked all the boxes for any buyer, and would have been market toppers no matter what state or location they were sold at. This large consignment of reputation home raised cattle with verified health programs, uniformity, and condition led to some very impressive prices Callaway Livestock Center. 100 head of 520 lb. steers sold for 388.75; 90 head if 585 lb. steers sold for 358.00, 83 head of 664 lb. steers brought 318.00 and 71 head of 711 lb. steers sold at 306.85. Windsor Livestock Auction sold a load of 802 lb. steers this week at 267.00 along with a load of 732 lb. steers for 273.10. Joplin Regional Stockyards had another big run that included 23 drafts with over 100 head each, the largest being 454 head of 919 lb. steers which brought 252.75. Boxed beef cutouts were lower for the week, choice closed on Friday at 322.06, down 8.37 and select closed at 302.31, down 2.75 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled 76K head with much of the trade taking place early to mid-week as feedlot managers became uneasy with early week happenings. Live sales were reported 188.00-199.00 and dressed sales reported from 308.00-316.00 with most sales at 312.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 4768 head with a weighted average weight of 559.44 lbs. and a price value of 320.30, 4.67 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 33.63.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
