Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, a light supply of feeder steers and heifers sold with higher undertones. Most auctions around the state were closed for the holiday week, a few early week auctions had light receipts and then a couple of barns held holiday week specials with several load lots of yearlings being highlighted. Joplin Regional Stockyards held their annual big bang video sale with over 55K head being sold. Most of the offering was from MO, OK, KS and TX with delivery now through the end of the year. 50% of that offering weighted from 800-949 lbs. Over 10K head of M&L 1 steers sold from 254.00-264.00 with prices showing little to no difference based on the delivery date. Heavy rains passed over central and some of northern Missouri with some areas receiving 6-8 inches of rain total, causing some flash flooding and putting some crop fields temporary under water. As of the last report 82 percent of pastures in the state are rated in the good to excellent categories, a vast difference from this point last year when only 2 percent fell in that rating. A few stick out sales this week included a gooseneck load of 505 lb. steers at Tina Livestock Market which sold for 389.25. Green City Livestock Market sold a load of 710 lb. steers at 301.50 and a load of 909 lb. steers at 264.25. A load of 718 lb. heifers sold for 277.50 and went to feed. Boxed beef cutouts were higher for the week, choice closed on Friday at 330.43, up 4.11 and select closed at 305.06, up 0.56 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report was limited with about 19K head reported as of the cutoff time for Friday's Report. Early prices were mostly steady live sales were reported 190.00-200.00 and dressed sales reported from 310.00-315.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 2239 head with a weighted average weight of 552.33 lbs. and a price value of 315.63, 5.55 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 28.12.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
