Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 5.00 higher. There were some instances sharply higher and even some spots mid-to late week in which some lower prices made an appearance for the first time in quite a few weeks. The supply of feeders continues to be heavy, even with a couple of short-lived snows falling in different parts of the state this week. Demand is good to very good as buyers continue to aggressively try and fill orders before grass arrives. Despite 60 percent of the state still showing on the drought monitor, farmers are feeding in and dealing with mud as soon as the sun comes out and the morning freeze is gone. Some of this week's stick out sales included a part load of 431 lb. steers at Kingsville Livestock Market which sold for 374.00. Callaway Livestock Center had a load of 535 lb. steers at 343.00. Tina Livestock Market sold a load of 737 lb. steers at 264.35. Two loads of steers 818 lbs. and 837 lbs. both sold at Kingsville Livestock Market for 250.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards had some impressive heifer prices this week with a load of 505 lb. heifers at 303.00 and two loads of 715 lb. fancy heifers which sold for 254.00. Boxed beef cutouts had slight gains again this week. On Friday choice closed at 296.20, up 2.16 and select closed at 286.66, up 1.58 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled 78K head. Live sales were reported at 180.00-182.00 and Dressed sales at 285.00-287.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 7,150 head with a weighted average weight of 554.59 lbs. and a price value of 297.73, 6.02 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 35.45.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
