Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 10.00 higher, with several calves once again seeing spots of 20.00 higher. Heifer calves saw significant strength this week as the steer/heifer spread had grown wider than usual over the last few weeks. The supply of feeders was heavy as weather conditions remained favorable. Joplin Regional Stockyards held the biggest one-day sale in the history of the barn, marketing 15,578 head through the barn. Nearly every barn saw large runs this week and this was actually the largest weekly volume of the year thus far as much of the early year sales were impacted by weather. Demand was good to very good and many of the calf prices are back to record levels passing those seen in 2015. Yearlings still have a bit to reach those records set last fall but are still at very respectable levels. Some incredible top sales this were reported this week. Several small packages of light 4 wt. steers sold with tops from 365.00-371.00. A load of fancy reputation steers sold at Windsor Livestock Auction about a month earlier than usual weight 552 lbs. and sold for 358.00. A part load of 609 lb. steers at Joplin Regional Stockyards sold for 305.00. Green City Livestock Market held their annual angus factored sale and sales included a load of 708 lb. steers at 280.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold a load of 872 lb. Boxed beef cutouts had slight gains this week. On Friday choice closed at 294.04, up 0.96 and select closed at 285.08, up 1.61 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report were very light with trade just starting to develop at the report cutoff. 14K head were reported with trade still occurring sales were stronger this week. Live sales were reported at 180.00 and Dressed sales at 285.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 11,861 head with a weighted average weight of 562.25 lbs. and a price value of 291.71, 1.57 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 33.71.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
