Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold mostly 5.00 to 10.00 higher with spots of 15.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate as the majority of barns held their last sale of the year. Loads of yearlings out numbered the supply of calves which is something that hasn't been seen for quite a while, 65 percent of the feeder offering was over 600 lbs. Early week saw very active market activity before business slowed for the holidays. Joplin Regional Stockyards kicked off the week with a big sale that included over 100 full pot loads of cattle. The monthly cattle on feed report was released on Friday. The report was viewed as slightly negative. On feed numbers were just slightly over the top side of pre report estimates and came in at 102.7. Placements were also right near the top of expectations at 98.1 and marketings were near the bottom of estimates at 92.6. A bit of moisture fell late week but in the liquid form right prior to Christmas temperatures were near 60 degrees so no one had to worry about chopping ice Christmas morning this year. A few stick out drafts this week included a load of 652 lbs. fancy steers at Joplin Regional Stockyards which sold for 259.00 another two loads of fancy 703 lb. steers also sold for 252.75. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold a load of 843 lb. steers at 235.50. On the heifer side there was several multi load drafts of light seven weights which sold from 218.00-222.60 with that top being two loads at Lolli Brothers Livestock Market. Boxed beef cutouts closed slightly higher for the week. On Friday choice closed at 292.93, up 1.29 and select closed at 261.15, up 0.33 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon came in just over 50K head. Live sales were reported from 170.00-172.00 and dressed sales at 270.00-272.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 3219 head with a weighted average weight of 551.02 lbs. and a price value of 263.20, 9.01 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 34.09.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
