Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders under 700 lbs. sold unevenly steady to 5.00 higher, feeders over 700 lbs. sold steady to weak. The supply of feeders was moderate, although significantly less than last week. Demand was moderate with much of the same story as buyers continue to want shots and weaning programs. The weather has yet to stabilize and really get and stay cold. Fairly sharp differences between day and nighttime temperatures continues to yield a lot of sick calves. The lack of moisture has pushed nearly the entire state back in some form of drought. All but two tiny areas on the banks of the Mississippi River were highlighted in the latest drought monitor. Futures markets provided some positive gains this week and the weekly slaughter was the largest since early July. A few stick out drafts this week included a load of 831 lb. steers at Windsor Livestock Auction that sold for 222.00. A full load of 463 lb. steers at Tina Livestock Market sold for 300.50. Kingsville Livestock Auction had the largest draft of the week which was 207 head of 775 lb. heifers which sold for 213.85. Boxed beef cutouts closed higher for the week; this is the first weekly gains for the choice cutout since the last of Oct. On Friday choice closed at 291.64, up 3.63 and select closed at 260.82, up 2.92 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon came in just under 30K with trading still taking place as the afternoon report was published. Live sales were reported from 167.00-170.00 and dressed sales at 267.00-268.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 5463 head with a weighted average weight of 553.40 lbs. and a price value of 254.19, 1.89 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 31.31.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
