Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder sold mostly steady with various spots ranging a few dollars on either side of steady. The supply of feeders was light to moderate, less than half of last week's offering and much more in line with what barns typically see in the middle of summer. Rains over the last couple of weeks have been a mood lifter and slowed the heavily drought influenced sales at least for the time being. Demand was moderate to good but buyers still discounting calves with high health risk especially those showing a lot of hair that just do not perform well in the summer heat. There was a notable uptick in interest for good quality replacement cows mostly from out of state interest. Over the last couple of months the state has seen many bred cows in the prime of their lives removed from production as producers have had to cull herds due to drought and has very few locally have any extra pasture or hay to take them back home. Several reports of loads shipping to states north as word has finally seemed to get out. Two cattle reports were released by USDA on Friday; the monthly cattle on feed report and the semiannual inventory. Most numbers were in line with pre-report expectations with the only major surprise coming with the June placements in feedlot number which was higher than most everyone expected. Overall though supplies are very tight as shown by deceases in total numbers on the inventory report and there is no signs showing any herd rebuilding as a whole at this point. Although the supply at barns was much lighter this week there was still some impressive stick out sales of some load lots around the state. Farmington Regional Stockyards sold 152 head of 594 lb. steers at 297.50. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold a load of 674 lb. steers at 268.00. Callaway Livestock Center had a load of 708 lb. steers which sold for 265.50. A load of 800 lb. steers sold at Lolli Brothers Livestock Market for 250.50 as well as another load of 925 lb. steers at 240.35. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed for the week. Choice closed at 302.74, down 3.20 and select closed at 276.73, up 0.12 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled a bit over 73K head. Fed cattle prices were stronger in the north with live sales 188.00-191.50 and dressed sales 295.00-300.00. Live sales in the south were mostly steady at 180.00 with some delivered live sales 184.00-185.00 in KS. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 4058 head with a weighted average weight of 551.45 lbs. and a price value of 274.20, 0.05 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 28.73.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
