Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to two weeks ago, steers and heifers steady to 5.00 higher, however there were some spots of weak to 3.00 lower depending on location and attractiveness of calves. The supply of cattle was moderate to heavy this week after most sale barns were closed the prior week for the holiday. Not only was there a week of closed sale barns, but dry conditions continue to take a toll and producers are bringing cattle to town that would otherwise still be at home. Demand was moderate to good with the market staying mostly firm, if the cattle are right. Some relief came late last week and over the weekend with rains hitting several areas of the state. The rains were needed, but more would be most welcome as pastures are getting thin, the corn crop is filling ears, and the soybean crop is starting to set pods. The most recent drought monitor for Missouri showed an expansion of D3 Extreme drought and parts of central Missouri are now classified D4 Exceptional Drought. Last week's Missouri Crop Progress categorized pasture condition as: 4 percent good, 25 percent fair, 41 percent poor, and 30 percent very poor. Supply of hay was rated: 23 percent adequate, 36 percent short, and 41 percent very short. There continues to be a steady demand of producers looking for hay, as hay fields have not yielded as much and they are worried about what the fall and winter will bring. Boxed beef choice cuts closed on Friday at 305.94, 10.96 lower than a week ago and Select closed at 276.61, 9.02 lower than a week ago. There were some negotiated cash sales with 35,663 head confirmed as of Friday's close, mostly from 183.00 to 186.00 for live, and dressed mostly at 290.00 to 291.00. Monday's Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 8534 head with a weighted average weight of 547.15 lbs and a price value of 274.15, 19.52 lower than a week ago, however the formula was influenced last week by special sales and few regular sales.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
