Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold 5.00 to 10.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate A good mixture of lighter weight calves all the way up to heavy weight load lots of yearlings in the offering this week. Price levels are resulting in some producers selling earlier than usual as well as bringing a few more heifers to town that were planned to be kept as replacements. Demand was good to very good. Grass is growing with the help of warmer temperatures and guys that graze but didn't have feed or a place to hold cattle are showing up to try to get acquire some inventory now. Some stick out sales this week included 39 head of 533 lb. steers at Ozark Regional Stockyards which sold for 265.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 127 head of 770 lb. steers at 208.75. Green City Livestock Auction held their Annual April Grass sale which had several very impressive loads of reputation cattle including 62 head 715 lb. steers at 225.00 and 60 head of 856 lb. steers at 202.85. Boxed beef cutouts jumped higher this week as grilling season approaches and supplies of beef remain tight. Choice closed at 290.098, up 8.91 and select closed at 275.78, up 5.06 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon was just over 102K head. Live sales were reported from 168.00 early up to 178.00 on later sales and dressed sales 274.00-280.00 with a few late 283.00. This was all time record high prices for both live and dressed sales blowing past the records set back in 2014-2015. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 6417 head with a weighted average weight of 530.16 lbs. and a price value of 238.71, 6.43 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 26.61.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
