Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold fully steady to 5.00 higher. Markets bounced back from last week's slight down turn and were back to climbing. The supply of feeders was light to moderate. A few new crop calves were noted in the offerings as some producers are not wanting to chance missing out on the current price levels so they are pulling the fall calves and sending them straight to town. Overall supplies continue to be tight. Demand was moderate to good. The Heifer offering outnumbered steers and bulls this week with several load multi load lots selling around the state. Grass has sprung following a few warm days as of late. For many folks looking off their porch it would be hard to believe but there has actually been some corn planted and one reporter even witnessed a field that was already out of the ground. Several more fertilizer buggies were spotted the last few days but many are having to pick and choose where they drive carefully. A few notable sales this week included a part load of 518 lb. steers at Lolli Brothers Livestock Market which sold for 265.00. Callaway Livestock Center sold a load of 732 lb. steers for 208.75. Another load of 813 lb. steers sold at Kingsville Livestock Auction for 197.00. Several load and multi load lots of six weight heifers sold this week with a 2 in front of the price. New Cambria Livestock Market sold 114 head of 709 lb. heifers at 197.75. Boxed beef cutouts closed higher for the week. Choice closed at 282.07, up 2.19 and select closed at 270.72, up 1.97 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon was near 93K head. Live sales were reported from 165.00-172.00 and dressed sales 270.00-272.00, with a few up to 277.50. Fed cattle prices for live sales are now within a breath of all time record highs set back right before Thanksgiving in 2014 and dressed prices are basically even with the records set in early 2015. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 4263 head with a weighted average weight of 534.11 lbs. and a price value of 232.28, 2.47 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 30.95.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
