Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, a light supply of feeders sold with firm to higher undertones on limited test. Auctions were interrupted by winter weather this week making transporting cattle difficult to impossible. Several inches of heavy wet snow fell which measured in the low double digits in the hardest hit areas. Some sales cancelled altogether with the rest seeing light runs. Cold temperatures followed and set in over the weekend. Freezing rain made for many icy roads Sunday afternoon and evening which could cause some problems for auctions starting out this week. The industry is currently awaiting the much anticipated semiannual cattle inventory due to be released on Tuesday, where we will receive the official numbers of just how much the cattle herd has shrink in the last year. Boxed beef cutouts continued their decline this week, choice closed at 267.76, down 3.96 and select closed at 250.54, down 5.89 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon was reported at a dismal 43k head. Sales were steady to lower, live sales were reported mostly from 152.00-157.00, dressed sales mostly at 248.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 3310 head with a weighted average weight of 547.53 lbs. and a price value of 202.82, 1.52 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 26.30.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
