Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold unevenly steady to 5.00 lower. A few instances of lightweight top quality calves in the condition to gain weight quickly being a touch higher but this was the exception as over all markets failed to reach many of the top prices seen recently. After two weeks of heavy supplies auctions got a bit of a break this week and most barns had only had moderate runs. Weather in areas like Nebraska and Iowa continued to cause problems for some northern orders but buyers to the south and west took the opportunity to fill many orders for grazers even though they have to have a place and feed to take care of them for quite a while before any grazing will be available. Overall quality was a bit lower and load lots weren't nearly as plentiful. The monthly cattle on feed report was released on Friday afternoon. Pre-report estimates had placements, the area which generally provides surprises if there is any, with an average guess of 91.5 percent and a range of 89.4-94.4 percent of last year. When all was said and done all three areas of the report did fall very close to pre-report estimates and should be viewed as a generally neutral report. On feed was reported at 92 percent, placements at 92 percent and marketings at 94 percent. Those numbers support the overall tightness of supplies. Boxed beef cutouts were lower once again this week, choice closed at 271.72, down 4.90 and select closed at 256.43, down 0.46 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon was reported just under 59k head. Sales were lower again this week, live sales were reported mostly from mostly 155.00 up to 157.00, dressed sales mostly at 248.00 with a few early at 249.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 8207 head with a weighted average weight of 547.79 lbs. and a price value of 201.30, 1.28 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 26.54.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
