Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves sold 5.00 to 10.00 higher, yearling steers and all heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher. The supply of feeders was light to moderate. Offerings were more typical of late July and a lighter than what has been seen the last several weeks. Heavy to extreme amounts of rain fell across north Missouri causing severe flooding in areas in and around St. Louis. The southern half of the state saw some rains mid to late week, not before the drought monitor was released on Thursday however which showed a big increase in the about classified as D3 or Extreme Drought. The hope of these rains was partly what kept receipts down a bit as potential rains gave farmers enough hope to hold off on selling at the current time. Not all areas in the south received rain and even those that did will need much more to turn the current situation around as two or three inches isn't going to do it. A few sale highlights this week included five loads of 850-900 lb. steers that sold at Unionville Livestock Market from 179.25-180.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 105 head of 631 lb. steers at 195.50. The number that is most eye catching this week however, came from MO-KAN Livestock Market where they sold 112 head of 502 lb. steers for 224.25. Feedlot sales for the week as of Friday afternoon totaled just over 72K head. Live sales were reported from 135.00-145.00 and dressed sales 224.00-225.00. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed for the week. Choice closed Friday at 269.24, up 2.12 and select closed at 242.25, down 0.25 compared to last week. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 3987 head with a weighted average weight of 550.93 lbs. and a price value of 195.68, 6.99 higher than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
