Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, the majority of steers and heifers sold mostly steady to 4.00 lower, however there were a couple of early week sales with spots 3.00 higher. The supply of feeder was moderate with another week of large numbers of cull cows coming to the sale barns. Several market reporters noted the impact the weather had on supply and demand on cattle going to the sale barns. Last Thursday's drought monitor for Missouri showed about seventy-four percent of the state affected by some level of drought, with quite a bit more classified as D1 Moderate Drought since last week and two percent of the state in southern Missouri classified as D3 Extreme Drought. Very welcomed precipitation is in the forecast; several areas in the state received rain overnight and into Monday morning, with more expected. Friday's inventory report showed all cattle and calves down two percent at 98.8 million head. All cows and heifers that have calved was estimated at 39.8 million head, two percent less than a year ago. Of that total, beef cows were estimated at 30.4 million head and milk cows at 9.45 million head. All heifers 500 pounds and over came in at 15.6 million head. Steers 500 pounds and over were down one percent at 14.4 million head. Bulls 500 pounds and over were unchanged at 2 million head. Calves under 500 pounds totaled 27 million head, three percent less than last year. This year's calf crop is estimated at 34.6 million head, one percent less than a year ago. This month's cattle on feed report was also published on Friday. Cattle on feed on July 1 was estimated at 11.3 million head, slightly higher than a year ago. Of that total, 6.9 million were steers, one percent less than last year and 4.45 million head were heifers, three percent more than a year ago. Marketings for June totaled 2.06 million head, two percent more than a year ago. Negotiated cash sales totaled 62,400 head, as of Friday afternoon's report. Live purchases ranged from 136.00 to 147.00 and dressed from 227.00 to 230.00. Monday's Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 5095 head with a weighted average weight of 555.79 pounds and a price value of 188.69, 5.02 lower than a week ago.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
