Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers under 650 lbs. sold uneven from 2.00 lower to 2.00 higher. Steers over 650 lbs. and all weights of heifers sold mostly steady to 3.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate and mostly lighter weights although there was a few loads of heavy weights this week. Prices have crept back up a little over the last couple of weeks, with some loads of 8 weight steers in the upper 150's and a couple of them just edging back into the 160's. Several reporters did note some very good quality at some barns this week, but overall quality and condition stretches across the spectrum. Hay season is nearly in full swing. Several fields are still awfully wet but many found some to cut over the last couple of weeks. As of the writing of this report however, rains have moved back into NW MO temporally parking tractors once again. Boxed beef cutout values were higher for the week, Choice closed on Friday at 256.42, up 3.25 and select closed at 246.50, up 3.41. Feedlot volume totaled a bit over 77k head as of the Friday afternoon report. Live sales were reported from 136.00-142.00 and dressed sales from 223.00-225.00. Monday's Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 8071 head with a weighted average weight of 546.30 lbs. and a price value of 188.08, down 0.60 compared to the previous week. The steer/heifer spread is 27.37.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
