Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers under 650 lbs. sold steady to 3.00 higher, over 650 lbs. steady to 2.00 lower. Heifers sold unevenly steady to 2.00 lower. The supply was moderate with a few barns holding special sales with decent offerings of better quality weaned and vaccinated calves. As typical for this time of year heavyweight yearlings are in short supply 66 percent of this week's supply was under 600 lbs. Calves that are unweaned, bawling and carrying extra flesh of course seeing discounts. Some areas mostly in the southern half of the state saw heavy rains with some areas exceeding 5 inches. Farmers continue to struggle to make progress planting and getting started with haying. Auctions around the state continue to see more cull cows than typical, that same story is playing out all across the nation. Prices for cull animals did back off a few bucks this week but overall that market has remained very strong and unlike other areas where drought is playing in to those marketing decisions most here are just trying to take advantage of current price levels. There is a tiny touch of concern that the cool spring and excess of moisture, which has pastures and hay fields looking a bit short could be a problem come summer. Friday saw the release of the monthly cattle on feed report, numbers were a bit bearish. On feed was reported at 102 percent, placements at 99.1 and marketings at 97.8. Both on feed and placements were higher than expected while marketings were below. Feedlot trade for the week as of Friday afternoon totaled just over 86K head. Live sales were mostly 138.00-142.00 and dressed sales at 226.00 all lower than sales a week ago. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed with choice closing at 262.17, up 3.22 and select at 243.09, down 0.81 compared to the previous week. Last week's estimated slaughter was reported at 680,000 the largest week since in over two years, as packers work to make sure meat counters are full for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, which is the official kick off of grilling season. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 7550 head with a weighted average weight of 531.28 lbs. and a price value of 188.68, 2.25 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 29.98.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
