Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders under 550 lbs. sold steady to 2.00 higher, 550-650 lbs. were unevenly steady and feeders over 650 lbs. sold steady to 2.00 lower. All in all not a lot of movement in the market as a whole seeing mostly sideways movement. That being said there is always exceptions and those could be found this week as well but overall a mostly sideways trend over the last few weeks. Although inputs are sharply higher currently the market is about 20.00-25.00 per cwt higher for most weight ranges of feeders than at this point last year. The supply of cattle was moderate to heavy, several more cattle made it town as the weather was a bit better for hauling this week. Not near as many full lot loads and very few loads of heavy weight cattle over 750 lbs. Most of these types especially the fancy high quality types have been sold already which is fairly typical by this time. Demand for grass cattle is good even though it is still several weeks before there is any chance of even the slightest tint of green, buyers seem to show up earlier every year. Feedlot sales last week were reported at just under 78K head on the Friday afternoon report. Dressed sales were fully steady at 218.00 and live sales were steady early and moved a buck or two lower as the week progressed. Most live sales were reported from 136.00-139.00 mostly volume was near the 137.00 mark. Boxed beef cutouts took a breather after a month of climbing. Choice closed on Friday at 290.42, down 1.99 and select at 283.41, up 1.08 compared to the previous week. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 7592 head with a weighted average weight of 550.29 lbs. and a price value of 179.59, 0.31 lower than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
