Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold unevenly steady from 2.00 lower to 2.00 higher. The supply was moderate, winter weather and very cold temperatures kept some cattle at home. Demand was moderate with the 500-600 lb. cattle seeming to find the most interest. A highlight this week was three loads of steers just passing the 850 lb. mark sold at Kingsville Livestock Auction on Tuesday and sold from 160.00-160.75. The monthly cattle on feed report was released on Friday. Marketings and On Feed numbers were right in line with expectations. Placements however, came in at 6 percent above last year which was even more than the top side of pre-report estimates. Over all the report was viewed as bearish. Lack of wheat pasture in OK and TX has resulted in many lighter cattle being put on feed earlier than usual making up a lot of those placement numbers. Futures markets lost some ground last week so perhaps some of this has already been factored into the market. What affect will be had after the initial dust settles and the industry really gets to analyze the numbers is yet to be determined. Next Monday, Jan 31 the semi-annual cattle inventory report is due to be released at the end of business. Many are awaiting to see what affects are reflected from the massive drought last year on total numbers once the report comes out. Boxed beef cutout values continued to climb last week, both choice and select have closed higher every week since Christmas. Choice closed on Friday at 292.41, up 8.10 and select at 282.33, up 8.36 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon totaled about 68.5k head. Live sales were reported mostly at 137.00-138.00 a few sales late in the week did get to 140.00, dressed sales were mostly 218.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 6017 head with a weighted average weight of 556.30 lbs. and a price value of 179.90, 0.09 lower than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
